However, because today\u2019s children and teenagers are still young digital natives, it will take time to understand the full, long-term effects of too much screen time on child development.<\/p><p>Even still, addressing the potential issues associated with screen time isn\u2019t as easy as it may seem. Screens are everywhere, which makes them almost impossible to avoid completely. Screens also aren\u2019t entirely or inherently negative, as they provide education, entertainment, and social connection \u2014 all of which can be\u00a0beneficial for your child.<\/p><p>As a parent, you have to determine an appropriate amount of screen time for your children. To that end, it\u2019s crucial to learn more about how screen time may affect your kids and what you can do to minimize screen time and its impacts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0635e92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0635e92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">HOW DO SCREENS IMPACT A CHILD\u2019S DEVELOPMENT?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9616bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a9616bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are several ways that screens are believed to affect a child\u2019s development, as well as their overall health and wellbeing:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-574e7b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"574e7b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">SLEEP<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c1eeb1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c1eeb1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Children are susceptible to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5839336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>sleep loss caused by\u00a0nighttime device use<\/strong><\/a>. In addition to making it harder to sleep, pre-bed screen time can result in decreased overall sleep and a reduction in quality of sleep.<\/p><p>This may be due, in part, to the energizing and stimulating effects of blue light. Devices of all sorts, including televisions and smartphones, emit blue light, which inhibits melatonin production and delays sleep. Kids may also get invested in their digital activities and become too excited to fall asleep, or simply stay up past their bedtime.\u00a0<\/p><p>From thereon, loss of sleep can be detrimental to childhood development. One study reports that young children who regularly get\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/03\/170309171109.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>insufficient sleep may experience\u00a0cognitive and behavioral issues<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0when they\u2019re older, such as difficulties with executive function tasks and peer relationships. In other words, getting poor sleep during childhood may have enduring and far-reaching health consequences for your kids.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0cfc24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e0cfc24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">SOCIAL SKILLS<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ba392f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ba392f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Too much screen time may also affect how children develop socially. According to the findings of one study, excessive screen time at a young age may result in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-018-6381-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>variety of undeveloped social skills<\/strong><\/a>, including those related to interacting with peers, helping other people, and being disruptive.\u00a0<\/p><p>Researchers from the study also warned that \u201clong-term implications have been observed for social skills in early childhood.\u201d This includes education, employment, and health outcomes. If your children have more screen time, there\u2019s no guarantee they will encounter these difficulties. Rather, researchers are likely trying to discover if there is some kind of relationship between screen time in childhood, social skills, and these long-term consequences.<\/p><p>Additionally, it\u2019s worth noting that research is conflicted about screen time and its impact on social skill development. A recent study found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/04\/200413103532.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>screen time doesn\u2019t\u00a0appear to harm social skills<\/strong><\/a>. The researchers did report one exception: children who used online games or social media multiple times per day seemed to have slightly lower social skills. This suggests that the digital activities children participate in during screen time could also impact their development, rather than screen time in and of itself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e35516a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e35516a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">EXERCISE<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bc84bef elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bc84bef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Increased screen time often leads to decreased physical activity. Watching TV, scrolling on social media, remote learning, playing video games, and other screen time activities are all sedentary. For instance, if one of your kids spends too much time playing video games, they have less time to play, move, and enjoy healthier alternatives.<\/p><p>Physical activity is crucial for childhood development and wellbeing. Researchers have found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34384543\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>adolescents enjoy\u00a0improved mental wellbeing<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0when they spend more time being physically active and less time using electronics.<\/p><p>In addition to physical health benefits,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/12\/141202135513.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>childhood physical activity appears to contribute\u00a0positively to cognitive development<\/strong><\/a>. This means children may even discover academic benefits from playing sports and exercising.<\/p><p>What\u2019s more, one study discovered that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/track\/pdf\/10.1186\/1471-2458-13-1100.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>active children tend to grow into active adults<\/strong><\/a>, carrying their propensity for exercise well into adulthood. Since physical activity is one of the main cornerstones of overall health, your children have a much greater chance of growing into healthy adults if they engage in physical activity, rather than screen time in their youth.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-44c30e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"44c30e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">WHAT AGE IS APPROPRIATE TO INTRODUCE SCREENS?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b15e912 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b15e912\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Although screen time certainly has its downsides, it\u2019s quite difficult for most parents to eliminate screens entirely for their kids. As a result, many parents are introducing screens later in life as a compromise. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/news-room\/news-releases\/aap\/2016\/aap-announces-new-recommendations-for-media-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>specific guidelines\u00a0for young children\u2019s screen use by age<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Younger than 18 months<\/b>: No screen time (except for video chatting);<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>18 to 24 months<\/b>: Limited high-quality and educational programming, co-viewed by parents;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Two to five years<\/b>: One hour of screen time per day, with continued emphasis on high-quality and educational programming that is co-viewed by parents.<\/li><\/ul><p>For children six and older, the AAP only recommends that parents make and maintain specific rules for screen time. This includes making sure that screen time does not interfere with other essential activities, such as sleep and exercise.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/24-04-2019-to-grow-up-healthy-children-need-to-sit-less-and-play-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0makes the following\u00a0recommendations for children\u2019s screen time:<\/strong><\/a><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Less than one year<\/b>: No screen time;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>One year<\/b>: No \u201csedentary screen time,\u201d such as watching TV;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Two years<\/b>: Less than one hour of sedentary screen time per day;<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Three to four years<\/b>: Up to one hour of sedentary screen time per day.<\/li><\/ul><p>Keep in mind that these are broad recommendations meant to help many parents manage their kids\u2019 screen time. Your family and your circumstances are unique and may warrant a different approach than what the AAP, WHO, or other health authorities recommend. Be sure to work with your pediatrician to determine when your children are ready to be introduced to screens.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f3430e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f3430e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY MANAGE CHILDREN\u2019S SCREEN TIME<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d49a69c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d49a69c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When it comes to screen time, it\u2019s less about elimination and more about regulation. By focusing on management, you can minimize the risks associated with screen time and teach your kids how to have a healthier relationship with technology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d09c8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3d09c8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">SET BOUNDARIES<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5399553 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5399553\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>First and foremost, set boundaries around screen time. Overall, rules are important for children, their growth, and their development; rules related to screen time are no exception.\u00a0<\/p><p>Establish clear rules about when, where, and how long children can use devices. Whatever limits you decide on, make sure they are appropriate for your household. After all, you must be able to communicate and enforce these rules if they\u2019re broken.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac205a8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ac205a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">CHOOSE MEDIA WISELY<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0342d3e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0342d3e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When your children do have screen time, be careful about the media you let them consume. You don\u2019t need to limit or control everything they watch or do, but you do need to make sure it\u2019s appropriate for them.\u00a0<\/p><p>Participate in screen time with your children as much as you can, especially if your kids are still young. Not only will you get to see what they\u2019re doing firsthand, but you can also teach them how to engage with their media mindfully, rather than simply consuming it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf42bdf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf42bdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">ENSURE SCREEN TIME DOES NOT REPLACE OTHER ACTIVITIES<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e57c122 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e57c122\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Make sure your child\u2019s screen time does not take the place of other activities, hobbies, events, or relationships. If you do, you may inadvertently teach your kids that screen time is more important than the other goings-on and people in their life.<\/p><p>If your children are young or have yet to find hobbies they\u2019re passionate about, consider signing them up for a soccer program, piano lessons, or other activities with regular meetings and events. In addition to being beneficial for their development, this will ensure that your children have an activity to do where they are unable to use screens. This may also reinforce that their real-world activities are more important than their digital ones.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1fdde8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c1fdde8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">USE PARENTAL CONTROLS WHEN NECESSARY<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa33fe5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aa33fe5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If necessary, use parental controls to manage screen time. Parental controls give your children choice and independence with their screen time while minimizing their chances of overusing technology or using it inappropriately.<\/p><p>Many devices, programs, and apps allow you to set time limits on how long they can be used.
